something even a dummy like me can understand?

The best site to start is
http://www.888options.com/

This is site is sponsored by options industry council and Options Clearing corporation, so they don’t try to sell you their brokerage services, but instead teach you about options. Read it carefully, the offer free DVDs I think some seminars, it’s very helpful.
Now yes, it is possible to lose a lot of money with options, but you can also use options to limit your exposure to market swings, so learn about it and good luck. Options trading is very exciting.

Can you trade options on Ameritrade?

You can trade options on Ameritrade.

Also, I read a good book titled options Made Easy. It helped me become a the current profitable options trader that I am. I am currently running a series on my blog about using options called ‘creating investment cashflow’. I just wrote part I and will write the next two parts in a few weeks. The point is that you can easily be profitable on options and lower risk with a few principles. Mostly, I try to stay on the sell side of (short) options. Once I started doing that, my investment returns greatly increased, to 80-100% yearly. You may find it interesting. I try to explain step by step how to do it, but they are long reads.

Here is the address:

I have little experience trading options and I would like to learn more. I am looking for a good book with good workbook exercises. Can anyone recoomend "Start Trading Options" by Kevin Kraus

I recommend "Understanding Options" by Michael Sincere as an introductory book.

Hit amazon and look for 5 star reviews on books. and get this book on options:

Option Volatility & Pricing: Advanced Trading Strategies and Techniques by Sheldon Natenberg.

Obviously that is more advanced but after the first book you should at the least skim one of the more advanced books and try to pick some of the tricks up through osmosis. There are a bunch of other options books out there too and the way I pick them is to read the reviews and then deciding what the content is and if the book suits me.

While I agree with the first two answers that you should read at least one good book about options before trading them, I suggest you start your education at the CBOE Learning Center at

http://www.cboe.com/LearnCenter/default.aspx

with the free online tutorials. Once you have completed the tutorials, you be better prepared to evaluate different options books and pick the one(s) best for you.

The CBOE has a bibliography at

http://www.cboe.com/Institutional/Bibliography.aspx

and if you stick with books from the bibliography you can be sure their quality.

My two favorites from that list are

McMillan, Lawrence G.: options as a Strategic Investment, Fourth Edition

Natenberg, Sheldon: Option Volatility and Pricing, Revised Edition

but I recommend you try to review the contents (at a library, a bookstore, or at amazom.com) to pick books appropriate for you.

I will also mention that Mark Wolfinger has written beginner books on options and particpates on the Yahoo message board at

http://messages.yahoo.com/Business_%26_Finance/Investments/forumview?bn=4686677

If the idea of being able to ask the author a question directly appeals to you you can find his books at
