Please let me know if you have any experience (good or bad) with either, or if you would recommend something else.

I don’t know these programs. There are many books available on option trading ranging from beginners to advanced. The best approach is first to read about options, learn how they work, then start on a small scale. Buying call and put options is more risky than selling covered options. If you don’t already own some stocks on which you can sell options, you may want to take advantage of the high leverage that option buying gives you.

You will need to open a brokerage account. Look for a discount broker with low commissions on options, or open an account with a flat annual or monthly fee that permits unlimited trading with no commissions.

Do you really wish to trade in Futures and Options? If you have limited resources, please do not. It is very very difficult to sustain the FO trades because of volatility. At the most you can be comfortable in options but definitely not in Futures.

Also, are there any advisory companies that help you with selecting good option buys? I realize all of these are fairly pricey but do any of them help in directing you to the right ones? Thanks.

I don’t really know but ,When I researched this I came up with some sites that appear to be informative.

When I say "where" I mean any good books or websites or strategies?

If you have small amounts of cash is it better to use it on penny stocks or options?

<<<Where did you learn to trade options>>>

When I first learned about options there was no internet and there were not a lot of books on the subject, so most of my initial education came from by broker. (In those days that was a person you talked to who gave you advice.)

Since that time I have expanded my knowledge by reading books.

<<<how long did it take you to get the hang of it?>>>

Years, but I never made any effort to learn what I needed to know quickly.

<<<When I say "where" I mean any good books or websites or strategies?>>>

There are two excellent spam-free web resources for learning the basics about options.

Once you have completed the free education available at these sites, I still recommend reading at least one good book about options before trading them. Any of the books in the bibliography at

http://www.cboe.com/Institutional/Bibliography.aspx

can be considered "good" depending on your level It is best to review several at a large library, large bookstore, or at amazon.com to pick a book appropriate for you.

My favorites, which may not be the best for you, are

McMillan, Lawrence G.: Options as a Strategic Investment, Fourth Edition, New York, New York Institute of Finance, 2002.

Natenberg, Sheldon: Option Volatility and Pricing, Revised Edition, Burr Ridge, Illinois, Irwin Professional Publishing, 1994.

IMHO, options. With options you can learn what you need to know about the underlying company. with most penny stocks that is difficult or impossible.

I should add that in general I would recommend that anyone with "small amounts" start by investing in long term traditional (not penny) stock positions.
